What is the role of a college interview?

Colleges and universities rely on alumni, students and staff to interview prospective students. They are often looking for:

  • Intellectual vitality and curiosity
  • The skills, qualities, values and interests you will bring to their community
  • A sense of your familiarity and interest in the school
  • Additional information or anecdotes you may not have shared in your application

Together, we'll make sure you interview with confidence and clarity.

As part of your mock interview package with College Essay Guy, you'll receive:

  • A pre-work packet designed for current college applicants, with step-by-step video instructions on how to prepare for your interview in a short window of time
  • A live Zoom preparation session and mock interview with one of our seasoned interviewers to practice your interview skills and learn how to stand out during these conversations
  • A write-up summarizing key takeaways from your interview and suggestions for improvement

How it works:

You complete a bit of pre-work for us to get to know you

You'll share the most recent draft of your personal statement, activities list, and supplemental essays, plus a little bit about you (always helps) and what you're looking for help with.

We'll meet with you live, conduct a mock interview and provide expert coaching

Your interviewer will work to make you feel confident and comfortable as you share more about your experiences and interests for the first half of the session. For the second half, they'll provide concrete suggestions on how to improve your answers and delivery.

You'll receive a custom write-up after the interview with takeaways and advice

Your interviewer will share what they see in you, what they'd love to have heard more about, and recommend resources tailored to your goals.

Meet Our Interviewers

Tom Campbell (he/him) has reviewed thousands of college essays and applications and interviewed countless students as an admissions officer at Pomona College and the College of the Holy Cross. He also works on CEG's internal college essay review committee where he provides insight and practical feedback on college essays and applications. He has also worked as a college counselor at a selective independent high school and understands how challenging writing about oneself can be and how high stakes it can feel — you’ll find nothing but empathy and solidarity from him as you craft your narrative.

Sarah Murphy (she/her) has over 20 years of combined experience in secondary and higher education. In addition to conducting interviews during her six-year tenure in the Trinity University admissions office, she currently conducts mock interviews for high school students and acquires questions from students who have interviewed with multiple colleges in the past. Sarah is in her seventh year as the Director of College Counseling at a private school in Texas where she has mentored many students through the college application process, ultimately securing admissions into their match schools including highly selective ones such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Rice, Georgetown, Cornell, MIT, UCLA, the service academies, and many others. Guiding students in finding the right “fit” is a joyful process for her when it involves an open mind, asking questions, and some self-discovery. She holds a BA in English with honors from Adelphi University and a master's degree in school psychology from Trinity.

Helena Prigal (she/her) truly enjoys helping students with all aspects of the college application process: from the initial search, to essays, to interview preparation. In addition to essay coaching and interview support, she serves as a seasonal admissions application reader for a liberal arts college in LA. She has over 30 years’ experience working in higher education, including as the Assistant Dean for Student Engagement at a New York City law school where she oversaw student counseling, student leadership programs, community development, and retention and academic support programs.  She also worked closely with the law school’s admissions office and scholarship committee in their review and selection processes.  She is a graduate of Wesleyan University with a Bachelor’s degree in American Studies and earned her Masters of Education degree from Harvard University with concentrations in higher education planning and counseling.
