Ethan Sawyer, College Essay Guy

This one’s for you college counselors.

Where’s the line between editing and rewriting?

How do I manage expectations with overly-involved parents?

How should I adjust my feedback when students are a week or two before deadlines?

I have a lot to say about these things. But guess what? I also have an amazing team of coaches and peer counselors who have a lot to say about these things. So I've put together a mini-course.

How's this course different from my previous courses? I've never gone as deeply into the actual essay editing as I will here—and I'll do it with a group of experienced coaches who've been doing this, in some cases, as long as I have.

How to Give Great Essay Feedback

A Mini-Course w/ Ethan, the College Essay Guy Team, & Special Guests

Finished December 11th, 2021.

This course is the result of requests from counselors to share more on how to provide concise, insightful feedback on students' college essays.

And best of all, it's a fundraiser:

All proceeds from registrations go towards the Matchlighters Scholars program.

That means all the money we raise from sign-ups will go toward helping low-income students receive free college essay help.

Over three hours, we covered:

  • How to suggest to a student major rewrites of an essay three days before a deadline (via email) and not have them freak out
  • Tips on making in-line edits: best and worst practices
  • Before and after case studies
  • How to help a student generate insight—and recognize it in their own essay
  • How to help a student feel confident in a solid essay they’re seriously doubting
  • Code-switching: coaching students who use African American Vernacular English in their writing
  • Helping students write about traumatic experiences effectively
  • How to help students who are chronic procrastinators
  • Lots more

Taking Ethan’s course added to my toolbox and will make me a better resource for my students and a more insightful and effective counselor overall.

Can’t afford this course?
I’m offering pay-what-you-can spots

Access is really important to me. In fact, it’s at the heart of most of everything I do and is why so many resources on my site are free. It’s why I’m offering pay-what-you-can spots for high school college counselors in schools, CBOs, or non-profits with small budgets and few resources for professional development.

“Wait, so if our counseling department doesn’t have a budget, we can still join?”

Yep. If that’s you, request a pay-what-you-can spot. Don’t be shy; I’d love to have you.
